What is Mothers Day?

What is Mothers Day?

What is Mothers Day, May 11, 2014? History http://www.history.com/topics/holidays/mothers-day tells it like this; Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May...

This the day when children, of all ages, try to show the woman who gave them life how much she means to them. That very special day when serving breakfast in bed is almost obligatory in some households, with Hallmark or extra effort homemade card is on the serving tray. I know this is an idealistic view, but when it comes to Mom, money is of no object, chocolate, candy, flowers, dinning at the finest restaurants & presents of all description. My mother has been gone now for a few years and my youngest is no longer in his mother’s home so I can only participate second hand. I sure do miss being able to do something special for my Mom.
Is “Mothers Day” a holiday hijacked by savvy marketers to fill another weekend with over-the-top spending? Yes! I also think it would be altogether impossible for everyone who wants to celebrate the day without this symbiotic relationship. Do I wish it were different? Again yes, but it is what it is because with our bizzy world it's necessary.
When I sat down to write this I had trouble, not because what “Mothers Day” isn't but because it is. It is all those things that it needs to be, a celebration of mothers everywhere and a positive cash flow situation for many businesses and industries. The thing is, nothing is so altruistic that it doesn't have “the ripple” effect in many different ways. We are all reliant on others, not the least of which is our mothers. For truly this is where we all began.
Hope ever one had a GREAT Mothers Day!

  1. My cousin and I share the same birthday. It regularly falls on mothers day. To me it was never a big deal to share my birthday with either my mother or her. She however regularly protested. Now that she is older if you think anything but the reason for the complaint has changed well think again. Now the complaint is that she get's "cheated" out of either mother's day or her birthday when they fall on the same date. It's sad how some people can taint what should be seen as special.
